Born in Belgium in 1942, he got his M.D. at the University of Liege in 1967 and Ph.D. in 1979.

In 1981, he moved to Brussels where he founded the Department of Neurosurgery in Erasme Academic hospital of the Free University of Brussels. Full Professor and Chairman until September 2007.

President of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies 2005-2009, he published over 350 scientific papers. 2015 president of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, he has been awarded of several medical prizes and international distinctions.

Knighted by His Majesty King Baudouin of Belgium, Baron by His Majesty King Albert II of Belgium in 2007, he is Grand Officier de l’Ordre de la Couronne (Belgium), Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (France), Chevalier de 1er grade de l’Ordre de Danneborg (Denmark), Grand Commandeur de l’Ordre du Mérite (Spain), Ordinului de Onoare from the Republic of Moldavia

Senator of Belgium since 2004, he is the author of several law proposals in health and bioethics.
